The Sculpture
A distinguished tribal warrior sits astride his horse, reins held firmly in hand, creating a striking composition that captures the strength and presence of traditional Bastar tribal art.
The rider is adorned with a tall conical headdress, layered neck rings, and a beaded collar, while the alert horse features raised ears, a detailed bridle and chest strap, an ornamental saddle blanket, and a flowing tail. Fine leaf and floral motifs add intricate handcrafted detail throughout the piece.
Horse-and-rider figures are among the most recognizable subjects in Bastar Dhokra art, traditionally associated with tribal chiefs, warriors, and local deities. The motif conveys ideas of leadership, courage, protection, and cultural heritage.
Created using the ancient Dhokra lost-wax casting technique, the sculpture begins as a hand-modelled clay form covered with fine wax detailing. Molten brass is then cast into the mold, destroying the original wax form in the process. Because the mold is broken after casting, each sculpture is inherently unique.
