The Sculpture
A commanding tribal horse rider rises proudly from this large handcrafted Dhokra sculpture, depicting a mounted warrior with reins firmly held in hand, a cross-body sash across his chest, and a distinctive tall headdress.
The horse is richly adorned with an intricately detailed bridle, tasseled bell strap, decorative chest band, and a sun-shaped rosette above a beautifully patterned saddle blanket. At 11 inches tall and 13 inches wide, the sculpture has an impressive presence and works beautifully as a standalone centerpiece.
Horse-and-rider figures are among the most iconic subjects in Bastar Dhokra art, traditionally associated with tribal chiefs, warriors, and local deities. The subject carries a sense of strength, leadership, movement, and cultural heritage.
The sculpture is created using the ancient lost-wax casting technique, practiced by Bastar's Ghadwa artisan community for generations. A clay core is shaped and wrapped with fine wax-thread detailing before being encased in clay and cast with molten brass. The wax melts away during casting and the clay mold is broken afterward, making each finished sculpture inherently unique.
Because the original mold is destroyed during the process, this exact sculpture cannot be reproduced.
Original. Handmade. One of a kind.
