The Sculpture

A richly caparisoned elephant stands beneath a domed ceremonial canopy, trunk gently curled, tusks raised, body draped in a decorative red and blue blanket with fine brass trim. Atop its back, a tiered howdah shelters several seated attendant figures — including a musician and mahout — beneath a peaked roof strung with hanging bell chains and tassels that catch the light with every angle. Made using the 4,000-year-old lost-wax casting technique of Bastar's tribal artisans — a hand-modeled clay core wrapped in wax thread, then cast in molten metal, with no two pieces ever identical.
